What's New

Adds macOS current-host defaults, per-platform dotfile variants, and opt-in full lockfile generation, plus assorted fixes.

New Features

  • New `[[bootstrap.macos.defaults_entries]]` blocks set macOS preferences per host (including `current`) and can patch nested dictionary values without clobbering siblings.
  • Dotfiles can now be deployed per platform using `variants` with optional per-variant targets.
  • An opt-in trial of complete lockfile generation is available via `lockfile_mode = "generate"`.
  • Bootstrap files and directories support a `phase = "pre-packages"` option to control when they are applied.
  • Task `sources`/`outputs` accept `{{usage.*}}` templates, and bootstrap file templates can use resolved `[vars]` values.

Improvements

  • Expanded macOS preference coverage with snake_case names for Finder sorting, cloud save location, Dock timing, and keyboard autocapitalization/spelling.
  • Nested macOS defaults patching preserves property-list types and creates missing parent keys.
  • Install progress reporting was reworked to reduce log clutter.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed self-update on 32-bit ARM.
  • Resolved macOS sandbox permission issues.
  • Corrected brew-cask handling.
  • Addressed several install progress reporting defects.

Upgrade Notes

This is an additive release with no documented breaking changes; existing `[bootstrap.macos.defaults]` shorthand continues to work alongside the new entry blocks. The `lockfile_mode = "generate"` behavior is explicitly an opt-in trial, so validate generated lockfiles in a non-critical environment before adopting it. New bootstrap phases and dotfile variants default to prior behavior unless configured.
